Welcome to the Fei SUN Group

The Central Dogma revolves around three critical biomacromolecules—DNA, RNA, and proteins—which all emerge from biosynthesis as linear biopolymers (from a chemist's perspective). This raises a fundamental question: Can we reprogram biological systems to synthesize biomolecules with unconventional chemical topologies—such as branched, cyclic, networked, or mechanically interlocked architectures? Achieving this would unlock materials and functional tools with properties beyond the reach of conventional linear counterparts.

We are leveraging protein topology engineering to advance synthetic biology, biomaterials development, and biosensing. These engineered architectures provide powerful means to dissect complex multicellular phenomena—including intercellular communication, developmental regulation, tissue regeneration, and neural signal transduction—across tissue, cellular, and subcellular scales.

Research Interests Include:

Protein Topology Engineering, Materials Synthetic Biology, Chemo-Optogenetics, Biosensing, Gap Junction, Electrical Synapse, and Neuroregeneration.
